When you get a free day to fish, there’s a temptation to hit spots popular with other anglers or where you’ve experienced success in the past. We all do it, and it’s understandable. But if you really want to up your game, on every outing make it a point to fish a stretch of water (or two, or three) that you’ve never tried before. It’s a great way to discover new, productive areas, and you’ll find yourself more alert since not knowing what to expect adds an exciting wrinkle to the experience. Exploration and discovery is at the heart of fishing, and you won’t be a truly capable angler until you can find and catch fish in spots you discovered on your own.
